The Skateboard Kid

Quick breakdown

My 20th birthday came and went with some fun fanfare, including a party in my room which Jeff has pictures of but I am too lazy to get from him so they will therefore not be posted. However, feel free to check out this gift:

That would be a postcard from their tour last year mysteriously stolen from my wall and then returned as a birthday card from Jenny Lewis herself, courtesy of Monica who had the pleasure of interviewing/getting drunk with her (this operation took place during the latter half of that binary). I think what really enthralls me about this sort of thing is not the "ooh wow signature" aspect so much as the making a celebrity (or at least as much a celebrity as Lewis could be qualified as) participate in a personally concocted madcap scheme. Perhaps David Cross would like to join us as a founding member of the Rules Club?

Even more exciting is that I have obtained the first step on the path to a killer Cinema Studies resume, and scored myself a job at the nearby Kims Video, the most famous/snotty indie video store in NYC. Basically I am paid to watch movies all all day long.

While it doesn't pay much at all, as you can see from the selection of titles it's been crucial in developing a further sense of intertextuality for writing, filmmaking or basically any sort of work in the field of film. And I have my pride and joy, the employee pick section where each of the four employees chooses four non-auteur movies:

Tommy would be proud, as I am officially repping two classics from Dave's basement that have now made the leap to the big time. The Skateboard Kid turns out to be a big favorite of the manager, and he and I spent a good while discussing the merits of the film (such as the fact that the dog on the skateboard on the box never appears in the film) and its disappointing sequel, which lacked the voice talents of Dom DeLuise.

Tonight I will actually fulfill the short film dare placed to me by another employee, just in time for Halloween. I think you will enjoy the results.

We back in the game.

I feel Newton should've seen far into the future and developed a theory of blogging to accompany the one about inertia. If it's not done for a long time, there tends to be an ever decreasing impulse to update.

For the past three weeks and one day, I have been sick. As you can guess, this is pretty bad. In those three weeks I have had three different doctors, each with a different diagnosis. The third one finally decided to do something and, suspecting a stomach ulcer, carted me into the hospital yesterday, plugged a few IVs in and put a camera down my throat to see what's going on. Then I woke up groggy, endured a few more needles and blood work, and got a prescription for fun. Maybe soon I can run and eat dairy again. The day before that Monica and I sold our Wolf Parade tickets (Bowery Ballroom) to a very nice man on Craigslist; $100 for the pair, and the deal was done way shady-like on the steps of Union Square Park. We will instead be attending:

Wolf Parade w/ Dirty on Purpose and dude from the show Entourage
Thursday, October 27th
NYU E&L Auditorium
Price: Very Cheap (probably $7), get 'em at Ticket Central

But that's not all!

Xiu Xiu w/ special guests
Thursday, November 3rd
NYU Skirball Center
Price: Very Cheap, again, get 'em at Ticket Central

All you blog stalkers buy them up and spread the word, we're looking for two more sellouts. These home shows are primarily the only ones I've been to, besides my much adored New Pornographers (who rocked world). Saving up money for something you wouldn't believe.

When I turn 20 I am sure I will have a commentary here about the odd feeling of no longer being a teenager, but from what I hear it is a pretty dull shift and generally unworthy of the shifting digits. Maybe I can tell Jeff what its like with sensory images.

IF, by the way, you have not seen our newest short film from the previous post (and this is likely, seeing as how it and ILNT's article devoted to it are void of commentary beyond ads promoting 'swapping anal'), you really should. It's completely school appropriate, only 45 seconds long and one of the most quoted new films of the fall semester. Decisive decisionmakers have embraced the chance to view it.

A new short film from us to you.

It's been a long, long time since I Like Nice Things was updated. Now it has been. With a new short film (only a minute long) conceived this very night by the super duo Dave and Jeff, also featuring Monica.

So as to prove ILNT isn't dead, go here and read more... it's a small download half the size of the usual MP3 file.

Dinner With Dave and Monica: A Minute Long Action Film

Also you should read Jeff's blog to see pictures of DeNiro and Damon. I think sitting outside in the cold waiting for an hour is less cool then randomly seeing someone on the street, but I don't feel bad.
