slipping through the mists of time

Wow, I feel like I haven't seen or heard from anyone in these parts forever. Probably because I haven't. Seeing Jeff S, however briefly, last weekend made me think I ought to get on here and check in on what everyone is up to these days.

Like Joel, I graduated a couple of weeks ago, which was a surreal experience to say the least. Four years flew by too fast, and I'm not sure I'm quite ready to enter adulthood just yet.

Post-graduation plans have been pretty set for the last few months. After accepting a position with the world's largest software company, I decided that Fargo, ND wasn't where I wanted to live, and ERP software wasn't what I wanted to work on. So, I backed out and transitioned from my role as an intern at Agile Sports into a full-time position. We do all sorts of cool stuff with software for NFL and college football teams, and are working to bring on some sweet partners. We also have an awesome start-up atmosphere (I'm full-timer #10 or 11) that makes everyday a joy.

So, I'll be sticking around Lincoln for the time being, and have a badass place in the Haymarket (a block from work!). If anyone is ever in Lincoln and wants to hang out or needs a place to crash, I'll be here.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing with this space in the near future. I'm putting together a list of post-graduation goals. One is to run as much as I did in high school (something I've neglected for the last four years). I've already gotten started, and am running far more than I drive every week. The second goal is to read some piece of legitimate for pleasure at least an hour a day. And really, I'd like to write more, but I'm not sure I have that much that's worth writing about.

We'll see what happens.

1-800-BETS-OFF

Last night I checked out the Council Bluffs casino scene for the first time. Let me just say that the two casinos we went to were probably the saddest places I've ever seen. Most of the people there fit into two groups: old people who had lost the will to live and were willing to throw everything they had at a slot machine, and the NASCAR crowd who, by the number of mullets I saw, were still big Billy Ray Cyrus fans. Really freakin' depressing. Anyway, JT, DR, and AP and I hit the blackjack tables since it's the only game where you've got a fighting chance. We all fared pretty well (except for AP), and I even ended up making $35 (on the $30 I played). Lessons learned: go to the casinos infrequently, play with very little money and leave when you're on top.

finale roundup

Ladies and gentlemen, it's that time of the year again...finale season! I only watch four shows regularly, and thus far, it's been a mixed bag. (SPOILERS BELOW)

LOST
After a mediocre third season and me getting ready to give up, the LOST writers went nuts with their two-hour season finale. The plan to attack the Others went surprisingly well and it looks like there is life after the island thanks to a flash-forward to the future. Jack's an alcoholic addicted to pain killers? How the hell did that happen? I was skeptical when I heard the show was renewed for a final three seasons, fortunately though, it looks like they may be able to return to season one glory.

Heroes
Seriously, I really want to like this show. Any show or movie where people have kick-ass superpowers, I'm down for. Unfortunately for this show, the writing has been mediocre and the acting awful. I've been willing to excuse it because there have been badass uses of superpowers thus far. In the last few episodes, however, the action has lulled for what appeared to be the ultimate battle between Sylar and Peter Petrelli. What do we get in the season finale? Nothing. No badass fight scenes, only more bad acting and Sylar being "killed" (no corpse, no death) and some ridiculous time travel back to ancient Japan? Lame.

The Office
Jim and Pam. Finally.

24
The current incarnation of the series is getting old. Characters and dialogue are tired ("You're going to have to trust me!"), and I still don't understand why everyone is always fighting Jack Bauer's decision-making. For the love of God, he's saved the world six times, let him do his thing. I'm hoping that a change of location and new cast around Kiefer Sutherland will breathe new life into the show.

southtown girls

The Hold Steady played Sokol Underground last Sunday. Go see this band if they're anywhere close, just incredible. Most people at the show were giving the band rave reviews out loud, and while some of it may have been the PBR talking, as one of the few sober people at the show, I can attest to their excellence. Craig Finn's happiness infected the crowd, Tad Kubler melted faces with well-placed, delicious guitar solos and Franz Nicolay rocked out with his waxed mustache.

Memorial Day weekend coming up, and as a salaried employee, I'm enjoying my first of two paid holidays this summer.
